This summer, do YOU want to eat
FRESH, LOCALLY GROWN FRUITS AND VEGETABLES?
“Community Supported Agriculture” (CSA) is a program by which people purchase their weekly vegetables directly from one local farmer for an entire season. Community members decide to invest in a local farm at the beginning of the season, and purchase ’shares’ of that farm. All summer and fall these “shareholders,” or members, receive freshly harvested crops every week at a neighborhood distribution site.
So, what’s the difference between a CSA and a Farmers Market? Through a CSA, members pay for all of their vegetables and farm products at the beginning of the farm season (typically around April or May). The share price goes toward the cost of growing and distributing a season’s worth of produce and paying the farmer a living wage.
CSAs make life a lot easier for a farmer, who needs start up money at the beginning of the season for purchasing seeds and equipment. Members also share in the risks of farming, including poor harvests due to unfavorable weather or pests. However, by being willing to take this risk, CSA members can take pride in the fact that they ensure the farmer a consistent group of customers for the year, start up capital, and through their support preserve small farms in their region.
In addition to getting the best of the produce that a local farm has to offer, CSAs tend to be about building relationships with other folks in the neighborhood. Because CSA groups are managed by and for the community, members are more connected to each other, to where their food comes from, and to the farmer who grows it.
